Early beginnings

1. When did you realize fashion design was your true career path?

I fell in love with fashion design early in life. As a teenager, I decided I would build my future as a designer. My passion came from a deep need to create, a love for aesthetics, and a desire to express myself through clothing.

It wasn’t just about liking clothes. I was fascinated by the entire process—from sketching to tailoring to the final stitch. Moreover, I experimented with shapes, colors, and textures. I also drew, painted, made jewelry, and explored every artistic outlet I could.

From a young age, I sketched clothing ideas and played with my wardrobe. Consequently, friends and family often came to me for styling advice. My creativity and personal style were noticed early.

One of my first real steps into the industry came through modeling in my early twenties. This experience opened doors, introduced me to talented designers, and gave me a close-up view of the fashion world. Furthermore, some of those connections remain part of my network today.

2. How did your education prepare you for the fashion industry?

Studying at the Academy of Technical and Artistic Vocational Studies gave me a strong foundation. There, I learned sketching, pattern making, draping, fabric selection, and garment construction. In addition, I mastered industry software like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Corel Draw for digital design.

Beyond design, I studied drawing, painting, fashion illustration, costume design, and textile creation—woven, knitted, printed, and unique textiles. Additionally, I learned how fashion houses operate, from production timelines to branding, retail strategy, and marketing. I built a professional portfolio that showcased both technical skill and creative identity. Moreover, the program encouraged me to develop a distinctive style that would stand out in the market.

Through deadlines, teamwork, and adapting designs for production, I gained confidence and practical experience. My education gave me technical expertise, creative confidence, and the business sense needed to succeed.

3. Which early career experiences shaped you most as a designer?

I first stepped into the industry as a model. Through this experience, I gained a behind-the-scenes view of shows, fittings, and the entire preparation process. In addition, styling allowed me to express creativity in new ways. I experimented with combinations, developed my own aesthetic, and learned how designs translate to real-life wearability. Modeling taught me how clothing interacts with the body—its form, fit, and movement. Furthermore, it connected me with designers, stylists, and clients, leading to collaborations and future opportunities.

Overall, styling strengthened my ability to communicate ideas and adapt designs for different needs. It shaped my brand identity and helped me connect my work to a target audience.

Professional Highlights

4. Your collections like Heartbeat; and The Darkness and the Light; attracted attention both in Serbia and internationally. What defines your creative process when developing a collection?

My creative process unfolds in multiple interconnected stages, from the first spark of inspiration to market-ready pieces. It begins with research and inspiration. I study seasonal trends, cultural shifts, art, music, and social movements. Then, I build a concept by collecting visuals such as mood boards, color palettes, textures, and defining the emotional tone of the collection. Inspiration often arises naturally from my personal experiences, emotions, and everything I carry inside me. When I actively explore inspiration, I look to nature, art, culture, and past experiences. This first spark sets the tone for the entire design process.

Next, I narrow inspiration into a clear concept or story. I select materials, patterns, and create a color palette that reflects the collection’s mood. Simultaneously, I define silhouettes, shapes, proportions, and key design features that unify the collection. Then, I begin sketching, starting freehand, followed by technical drawings. I transform 2D ideas into 3D shapes while sourcing materials, working with fabric samples, and creating embellishments. Draping and cutting follow, leading to the first sample garments. During this stage, I collaborate with a modeler to perfect the fit.

Afterward, I carefully organize the collection to ensure flow, variety, and a logical story from the first to the last garment. I also identify signature pieces that define the brand’s identity. Finally, comes the presentation stage. Styling decisions—accessories, shoes, hair, and makeup—complete the vision. Then the fashion show, runway presentations, public appearances, digital campaigns, and collaborations with marketing teams follow.

Throughout the process, ideas evolve and are reworked multiple times. Moreover, collaboration with designers and marketing teams is crucial. A collection is not just clothes; it is a story in fabric and form.

Ultimately, the key to success is balance. Creative originality must combine with wearability, brand identity, and production feasibility.

5. Can you describe the fashion lines you create under the Marija Aidooklin Atelier brand? What makes them special and what types of materials do you work with to bring your vision to life?

The “Heartbeat” and “The Darkness and the Light” collections, as well as the Marija Aidooklin Atelier brand, are created for a confident, classy, and feminine woman with exquisite taste. These women represent power, beauty, and uniqueness. They love and reward themselves and always leave a mark of originality.

The brand reflects elegance, wearability, femininity, glamour, and timeless sophistication. For instance, the “Heartbeat” collection features asymmetrical cuts of varying dimensions, unified into a modern, refined whole, crafted from the finest materials. Its inspiration comes from costume design.

Similarly, “The Darkness and the Light” collection reflects my recent emotions. Light symbolizes humanity and love, while darkness represents strength and power. These haute couture pieces are handmade and unique. Additionally, I create jewelry by hand, styled with the collection to highlight sophistication and luxury.

Each piece is designed for women who want to feel their best. The creations emphasize grace, sophistication, and the feminine silhouette. They are made from luxurious fabrics for women who value quality and striking appearance. I treat each garment as a work of art, aiming to make clients feel “royal.”

To bring my vision to life, I work with a wide range of natural and synthetic luxury materials. I often use silk, cashmere, and cotton for their softness, shine, and durability. In addition, I experiment with chiffon, lace, velvet, organza, and tulle for unique textures and draping. Above all, I prioritize the highest quality materials for luxurious feel, durability, and aesthetic appeal.

6. Can you share more about your participation in the Cannes International Fashion Show and how that experience influenced your career?

I was invited to the International Fashion Show and Competition in Cannes, France, from May 23-25, 2025. The festival gathered 58 designers from 38 countries ahead of the Cannes Film Festival. Therefore, I represented both my brand and my country, Serbia.

My emotions were a mix of pride and honor. It was a dream come true, the result of years of hard work and dedication. Furthermore, the experience was unforgettable, my first international fashion show. I gave my best, as did my team, and the event radiated positive energy. My collection, “The Darkness and the Light,” placed in the top 10, earning numerous positive reviews and invitations for international collaborations. Additionally, I was commissioned to create styling for the festival host, highlighting my creations as “magnificent.” Several dresses sold at the festival, and I received an invitation to exhibit in the official pop-up store next year.

This experience increased my visibility, credibility, and potential for growth. It introduced my designs to a global audience, gained media attention, and connected me with industry experts and clients. Ultimately, the success at Cannes elevated my profile, showcasing my talent and creative vision.

7. Which collaborations, events or media appearances (TV, magazines, festivals) do you consider the most important for the development and recognition of your brand so far?

The “Heartbeat” collection received a great response from clients and attracted media attention. After returning from France with “The Darkness and the Light,” I was invited to national television shows, gave magazine interviews, and was featured in international publications.

I appeared on the front cover of “Quadro” and the back cover of “Artego,” which was both an honor and a milestone for my brand. Each appearance contributed to brand development, recognition, and business opportunities.

Since 2024, I have collaborated with the renowned art organization “Art Battle Balkan,” styling the festival host in dresses from my new collection, currently held in Tivat, Montenegro.

8. As a designer who also illustrates and handcrafts elements of her work, how do you balance the artistic side of your process with the demands of the fashion business?

Balancing creativity with business demands is essential. I achieve this by conducting market research, understanding consumer behavior, and making commercially viable decisions while staying true to my artistic vision. Defining the brand, identifying a unique selling proposition, and knowing my target audience guide my creative direction. Additionally, feedback from customers helps refine both the aesthetic and functional aspects of my designs.

Business skills are equally important. I understand production costs, marketing strategies, and profitability, which ensures my creative ideas become successful products. Collaboration with marketing teams helps my work resonate with the target audience while preserving creative integrity. In the end, I prioritize design elements that balance artistic appeal and commercial success.

I envision my brand evolving by staying true to its core values while embracing new creative directions. I plan to experiment with innovative forms, immersive experiences, and unique materials. As I expand internationally, I aim to understand cultural nuances and adapt my visual identity to different regions. This approach will allow Marija Aidooklin Atelier to grow globally while remaining authentic and distinctive.

10. What types of partnerships, fashion events or markets are you most interested in exploring down the road?

I am most interested in partnerships that enhance brand visibility, open new markets, and create unique products. These collaborations may involve other brands, celebrities, and digital platforms, including social media. I also want to participate in major fashion events like New York Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, and Milan Fashion Week. Additionally, trade shows and pop-up shops provide opportunities to showcase my work, network, and establish meaningful industry connections.

11. What is your ultimate goal as a designer – what legacy would you like your brand to leave in the world of fashion?

My ultimate goal goes beyond creating beautiful clothes. I want to leave a lasting impression through the identity and influence of my brand. From Vision to Identity: A Designer’s True Foundation

Your career spans nearly 15 years, with experience in Serbia, Montenegro, and now London. How have these diverse environments shaped your approach to fashion design?

They have certainly influenced me in different ways. At the beginning of my career, while exploring my unique fashion signature, the experience of getting to know different cultures was incredibly valuable. It was a period of intense learning, where I familiarized myself with materials, their textures, functionality, and various crafting techniques. Different cultures and traditions significantly shape creativity, aesthetics, and the path to self-expression.

Ultimately, all of this is presented in a way that reflects how the designer perceives the atmosphere and wishes to share their vision with the world.

Your education at Italian Academy del Lusso provided a strong foundation, but your evolution as a designer came through real-world experiences. What were the defining moments that solidified your identity in fashion?

A key moment in my journey was when I consciously began approaching fashion with awareness. I discovered staggering facts about how fashion and clothing impact nature and the environment we live in. The scale of this issue today is enormous. While it is discussed, I believe it is still not addressed enough.

Sustainability in fashion is crucial, and I wanted to contribute to this conversation by promoting eco-conscious design, ethical production, and responsible consumption.

IGMAR

Fashion is an industry of transformation. How has your creative direction evolved over the years, and what remains the core of your design philosophy today?

The focus is on slow fashion, handcrafted designs, and recycled materials. Timeless garments and accessories are made from high-quality materials, such as wool, ensuring durability and reducing the need for frequent replacements. In addition to sustainability, special attention is given to detail, craftsmanship, and precision—highlighting the artistry behind each piece.

With multiple fashion shows, competitions, and international exposure, how do you maintain a distinct signature in an industry that constantly reinvents itself?

I believe every designer, or anyone expressing creativity, must first understand themselves. This foundation helps build a strong brand identity that stands out. It creates a clear visual language and message for the audience. Trends come and go, but staying true to your vision and aesthetic is key. Within that framework, you can explore, innovate, and refine your style—no matter how fashion evolves.

IGMAR

The Art of Fashion as a Lifestyle

Your work is not just about creating garments—it’s about shaping a vision. How do you integrate design, craftsmanship, and lifestyle into a seamless expression of your artistry?

I strive to live my artistic vision and share my story authentically. Communication is key—both with my audience and the people I meet daily. By listening, I gain new experiences, ideas, and constructive feedback. These exchanges spark emotions, inspire creativity, and strengthen my connection to the real world.

Running a fashion brand requires both strategic business acumen and artistic integrity. How do you navigate the balance between creative freedom and commercial success?

Beyond defining a strong brand identity, mission, and values, ongoing market research is crucial. Trends offer inspiration, but they should be reimagined through a designer’s unique vision. I view market and trend analysis as an opportunity to learn, adapt, and explore diverse perspectives—responding to the evolving world around us. By integrating these insights, designers can create authentic pieces that reflect their artistic expression while still meeting commercial demands.

IMG

The industry comes with its share of challenges. What are the most complex obstacles you’ve faced, and how have they influenced the way you approach your work today?

There have certainly been many obstacles along the way. Once I accepted them as a natural part of my development, I started seeing them differently. Given how fast we live today, one of the major challenges was technological advancement, digitalization, and adapting to new tools, platforms, and social media for promotion. Resilience and embracing change were necessary, especially as they required quick, innovative solutions. Maintaining productivity and creativity was another hurdle.

Today, my focus is on establishing a balance between creativity and eco-friendly practices, reducing waste, embracing sustainability, and prioritizing quality over quantity.

IGMAR

Fashion is not only about trends but also about longevity and authenticity. In a market saturated with fast fashion, what is your perspective on staying relevant while preserving artistic integrity?

Staying true to my vision. Listening to that inner voice that never sleeps.

Emphasizing sustainability.

Continuously pushing boundaries.

Developing and maintaining exceptional craftsmanship, focusing on details and high-quality finishing.

Limiting overproduction.

Igmar – Crafting the Future of Luxury Handmade Fashion

Igmar represents a new chapter in your career, focusing on handmade, customized fashion pieces. What was the driving force behind this transition, and how does it reflect your vision for the future of fashion?

The driving force behind our work is our commitment to sustainability and a deep concern for the environment, which is reflected in our brand’s vision. This is how the idea of Igmar came to life and continues to evolve. We prioritize the use of eco-friendly materials, such as sustainable yarns, to ensure a positive impact on both the fashion industry and the planet. Comfort and the well-being of our consumers are also central to our mission. We focus on providing warmth, softness, and a sense of coziness, ensuring that each product promotes relaxation and comfort. By embracing these values, we aim to contribute to creating a more sustainable, responsible, and compassionate fashion industry.

IMG

Craftsmanship is at the core of your latest designs. What makes Igmar’s handmade sweaters, scarves, and accessories stand out in today’s industry?

Our products stand out for their high-quality materials. We carefully select soft, durable, and sustainable fabrics. Special attention is given to every detail. Each item is handmade with a meticulously considered construction, finished seams, and overall durability. We produce in small batches, making each piece unique and exclusive. By planning and executing each piece with precision, we minimize waste, ensuring sustainability in every step.

Now based in London, a hub for cutting-edge fashion, how has the city influenced your creative process and the way you approach design and brand positioning?

When I arrived in London, I quickly started exploring places where handmade products are sold to truly feel the atmosphere. Besides the many events, fairs, and selling points, I was thrilled by how much people here deeply appreciate handmade craftsmanship, dedication, and the emotion woven into each piece. This motivated me even more to continue creating new products and participate in the beautiful exchange of energy that this city so generously offers. I felt that Igmar was in the right place and on the right path.

Screenshot
Screenshot
Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for Igmar? Do you see collaborations, new collections, or expanding into different areas of design?

Igmar is open to new collaborations, both locally and in Serbia. Since we craft items on demand, we strive to respond promptly to new collections—sometimes in the current season’s colors, other times in the form of new designs or even completely new products.

Igmar is in the process of developing long-term ideas. As we are still in the early stages, I would love to share more once everything reaches its final phase. What I can say is that, in the future, we will create custom clothing tailored to the individual needs of our clients.

IGMAR

The future of fashion is evolving rapidly. With sustainability, customization, and craftsmanship taking center stage, where do you see the role of designers like yourself in shaping the next era of fashion?

I would love for us to make an impact, especially in raising awareness about sustainable fashion and its significance today. We will continue to explore new materials and production methods to push the boundaries of craftsmanship, preserving traditional techniques while innovating and revitalizing them.

From Vision to Reality: Why Aspiring Artists Need a Space to Shine

Breaking into the creative industry isn’t easy. Aspiring artists and fashion designers often struggle to find the right platform to showcase their talent. Without the right exposure, their work can go unnoticed, limiting opportunities for growth. In a city like New York, where creativity thrives, access to well-organized event spaces can make all the difference. Here’s why having the right space is essential for emerging artists to gain recognition and connect with the right audience.

1. Visibility and Industry Exposure

New York is a hub for art, fashion, and innovation, but standing out in such a competitive landscape requires more than just talent. A dedicated event space provides artists with a stage to present their work in a professional setting. Whether it’s a gallery exhibition or a pop-up fashion showcase, the right space attracts collectors, buyers, and industry insiders who can take an artist’s career to the next level.

2. A Professional Setting Elevates Credibility

Presentation matters. An artist’s work may be exceptional, but without the right environment, it may not get the appreciation it deserves. A well-curated event space enhances the visual impact of an artist’s creations, making their work feel exclusive and high-end. This credibility helps attract serious collectors, investors, and fashion buyers looking for fresh talent.

3. Networking Opportunities That Lead to Growth

Art and fashion are industries built on connections. When emerging artists exhibit in the right space, they gain access to influential networks. Industry professionals, media representatives, and potential collaborators are more likely to engage when an event is thoughtfully curated. These connections often lead to future collaborations, sponsorships, and career-defining opportunities.

4. Affordable Spaces Make Creativity Accessible

High rental costs in NYC often prevent emerging artists from showcasing their work. Affordable event spaces provide a solution, allowing creatives to display their talent without financial strain. By making art and fashion events more accessible, these spaces help democratize the industry, ensuring that talent—not just budget—determines success.

5. A Steppingstone to Greater Recognition

Every renowned artist and designer started somewhere. The right event space serves as a launchpad, helping emerging talent build their brand and gain momentum. With social media, press coverage, and word-of-mouth promotion, a single event in the right location can lead to incredible career breakthroughs.

Creating Opportunities for the Next Generation of Creatives

Access to the right space is more than just a luxury—it’s a necessity for emerging artists and designers looking to turn their vision into reality. By investing in well-organized, affordable event spaces in NYC, the creative industry fosters fresh talent, innovation, and the next wave of artistic visionaries.

Why Fashion Stylists and Designers Should Invest in Event Exposure

In the fast-paced world of fashion, standing out is no small feat. For fashion stylists and designers, investing in event exposure can elevate their brand, attract new audiences, and unlock unexpected opportunities. Whether it’s a runway show, pop-up event, or digital showcase, presenting your work to the world can transform your career trajectory.

Build Your Brand Identity

Fashion events are the perfect stage to express your unique style and vision. Each event becomes a canvas where your creations take center stage, allowing attendees—whether fashion enthusiasts or potential clients—to immerse themselves in your brand. This not only solidifies your identity but also makes your brand memorable in a competitive industry.

Expand Your Network

Fashion events are hubs for industry insiders, including buyers, influencers, photographers, and media professionals. By attending or showcasing at these events, you open the door to valuable connections. A single conversation with the right person could lead to press coverage, collaborations, or long-term partnerships.

Boost Public Exposure

Public exposure is key to brand growth. By showcasing your work at high-profile venues or online platforms, you put your designs directly in front of your target audience. Social media buzz and event coverage can amplify your reach, ensuring your brand gains visibility far beyond the event itself.

Establish Credibility

Participating in respected events adds credibility to your brand. It signals to potential clients and collaborators that you take your craft seriously. High-profile appearances build your portfolio and position you as a professional in the industry, enhancing your appeal to future collaborators and customers.

Unlock New Opportunities

Each event is a stepping stone to greater success. A memorable presentation can lead to invitations to international fashion weeks, collaborations with major brands, or features in top fashion publications. Events act as a launchpad, propelling your career to new heights.

Embrace Digital Platforms

The rise of digital showcases, virtual fashion weeks, and live-streamed events has made it easier than ever to reach global audiences. By investing in online events, you ensure your brand stays accessible and relevant in the modern era. These platforms allow you to connect with consumers worldwide without geographical constraints.

Maximize ROI with Strategic Planning

While events require investment, a well-planned approach can deliver exceptional returns. Focus on events that align with your target audience and goals.
